Over the holiday weekend, I chatted with Jeané Franseen Fox News Media about my latest consumer trend data. Might there be a glimmer of hope and positivity amidst all the economic and the electoral doom and gloom?
We dove into the good, the bad, and the ugly.
I like to end on the good, so...
THE BAD - Faith in the economy and government is waning...
> 65% say prices have risen too much (+5pts since April)
> 36% feel anxious about the economy and are cutting back on spending (+6pts since April)
> 61% have lost trust in the government (+3pts since May)
THE UGLY - Many fear it will only get worse...
> 62% fear the economy will worsen post-election
> 52% worry about rising violence after the election
YET THERE IS GOOD — The 4 Pillars of American Joy Remain
Even in tough times, if we take a second to pause, Americans reflect on some positives of being an American. Last year, we identified 4 pillars of American Joy — themes that consumers feel America embodies, especially when thinking about the fourth of July.
From my June data, % of consumers who appreciate each aspect of America compared to other countries:
Freedom and Rights, the cornerstone of joy
> Freedom 80%
Patriotism and National Pride, the joy of belonging
> Patriotism and Pride 43%
Opportunities and prosperity, the joy of potential and promise
> Equality 38%
> Potential/Prosperity 32%
> Resilience 32%
Celebrations and Family Gatherings, the joy of togetherness
> Togetherness/Unity 30%

I still choose joy, and you?
